Google To Launch Operating System

Thursday, August 20, 2009

Google plans to challenge Microsoft's dominance of the operating system market with a free product called Google Chrome OS.

It is based on the company's Chrome web browser and will initially be targeted at mini laptops known as netbooks. Google said the OS will be designed for speed, simplicity and security "so users don't have deal with malicious programs and security updates".

Although the news has intrigued the industry, and won initial support from several top PC vendors, including HP, Acer and Toshiba, analysts do not foresee an "immediate threat" to Microsoft. Google Chrome OS is expected to be released by the middle of next year, some months after Microsoft releases Windows 7 in October.

Microsoft said it was unable to comment on Google's venture and a representative for the company said:"We haven't seen it".

"We don't know anything other than what was has been written in an online news journal. So it's har for us to know, without seeing what they're doing, to comment."
